In My Room

My room is my own

my place of refuge

from the outside world

where no one can intrude.

**

I still make connections

by phone and TV,

but I have control

of all that, you see.

**

It’s a place I can bring

my friends, one and all,

face to face,

or simply by making a call.

We share our secrets & confidences,

talk fashions & boys and car licenses.

**

I can hide inside it,

do homework, hear tunes,

watch TV and feel snug

in my own little cocoon.

**

I’m surrounded by memories

of growing up years.

I can safely and privately

shed a few tears

when sad, unhappy or “ticked” at life.

These fragile teen years

can carry some strife.

**

There are days, in school

when people are rude.

My room awaits me

Escape! Solitude!

**

There are those times

when the room seems too small.

The walls close in,

so I go to the mall

and wander about

with a friend or my Mom

‘till I’m bored or broke

and the time runs out.

**

And tho’my room is my favorite place,

there’s something missing,

I can’t give it a face.

Seems my room can be filled

with things to delight

every sense that I have, but....

**

I need some insight

into how I can feel

more fulfilled in my days.

I want to expand and am

open to ways

**

What does it take

to feel full in the heart?

A room full of things,

a brain that is smart?

**

Could it be that my “room”

is a symbol of mind,

my heart and my soul

unique, one of a kind?

**

I know that I have some great gifts

I can offer

in places with people

my room doesn’t cover.

**

If I push back the walls

of my room to include

the different, the aged,

the lonely or crude

there’s a knowledge the Universe has to impart,

I just need to look for

a place I can start.

**

Is it through people, all ages, all colours

life teaches it’s wisdom

if we pull back the covers

to reveal our true spirits, non-judgement, support

with intentions to serve,

that it’s hearts that we court?

**

There are people in places

who don’t have a home

let alone a room

they can call all their own.

I think I’ll go looking

for ways I can serve

and not just remain

in my room and observe.

**

I’m a really good person

with so much to share,

but it’s a comfort to know

that my room is still there!
